Background
Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) is working for the Development of Water Resources and ensuring proper utilization of the same through Flood
Control, Irrigation, Drainage, Salinity Control and Reclamation of Land from Sea. BWDB has implemented 791 small and large projects (upto June 2014)
for development and management of water resources. Out of 11.0 million hectares of flood free and drainage congestion free land, around 6.14 million
falls within jurisdiction of BWDB Projects which is around 72% of total cultivable land. Among these, 1.57 million hectare lands are under irrigation
projects. BWDB is providing irrigation to 1.42 million hectares of land through 118 projects .. Total length of embankment constructed is 11,283 km
including 5,107 km coastal embankment. During the year 2013-14, additional 9.80 million tons of additional food grain has been produced than pre project
condition due to implementation of these projects. In addition, around 1,020 Km2 of Land has been reclaimed by constructing cross-dams in the Meghna
Estuary.
